I think it's too early to say it's coming to an end, he's still on the roster. I think it's more of a, "we'll see at the end of the season" type deal. I agree that picking up the option made no sense, I think it was a reporter just trying to make a story when there obviously wasn't one.

There's always that possibility, but like you say, the option made no sense. If he's kept around for 2015 it will almost certainly be in a backup role, and you don't pay a backup QB $10M.

And he has to remain after two NFL drafts, which could be the real killer. If the Vikings draft a Mettenberger or a McCarron in the 3rd round, they will be drafting a QB again in 2015, almost guaranteed. Cassel will still be under contract in 2015. The chances of Ponder sticking with the Vikings just get slimmer and slimmer.

General manager Rick Spielman told reporters Tuesday that the team has no plans to shop the quarterback during this week's draft.

"We wouldn't trade Ponder," Spielman said. "... That would leave us one quarterback. I would not do that, we're gonna need two quarterbacks."

Spielman also told the room that bypassing Ponder's option was more about leaving "all our options going forward, especially financially going into next year."

You are probably right. He is no Joe Webb Here is Webb's stats by the way. 3tds./ 5 ints. and a 66.6 QBR.

Whoa, not very good, even for a guy with only 5 NFL starts. He'll certainly never be a serviceable NFL QB with a start like that!

I am not sure but I bet it was someone like Joe Montana, Troy Aikman or Brett Favre and I am betting that you will make some comparison of Webb to them

The only comparison between the two are those statistics, which prove only that you can't judge someone's NFL career on 7 starts, or 5 like you were doing.
