This is exactly why our team has a hard time building a dynasty. We keep making excuses for these players. When Percy Harvin went down last season. The coaches were praying that someone would step us. Michael Jenkins couldn't get it done, Devin Aromashodu couldn't get it done, and Stephon Burton DEFINITELY didnt get it done. I felt like his best opportunity to shine was last season, but he was just as irrelevant. Now that his spot on the team may be in jeopardy and he makes a couple of splashes in OTAs, he should get another chance? I rather see someone like Greg Childs take his spot on the roster. Child was supposed to be where Patterson will be in the future, at the #2. Dont hold back hard workers like Child's back because Stephon Burton wants another chance. CUT HIM.Mothman wrote: Yeesh, what's the hurry?
He may just be a good practice player or he may be a young guy who needed some time to find his game as a pro. I haven't been impressed with him thus far but they've invested time in developing him and maybe that's about to pay off. If it doesn't look that way during training camp and the preseason then sure, cut him, but why be hasty about it? Burton's a small school player trying to make it in the pros and he's had 2 seasons to prove himself, not 3. Sometimes the third time is the charm.

I'm not making excuses. I'm simply saying that developing a small school player into a more viable NFL player is a process and it can take time.JEC334 wrote:This is exactly why our team has a hard time building a dynasty. We keep making excuses for these players.
He's clearly getting another chance and no, I'm not saying he should get that chance because his spot on the team may be in jeopardy and he made a couple of splashes in OTAs. I'm saying they should give him that chance because they've already invested the time in getting him to this point in his 3rd season and maybe it will pay off. I'm not suggesting he'll be a star but maybe he's on his way to becoming a valuable role-player for the team. Maybe he won't be any better at all. He obviously didn't do much last year. The point is there's no need to cut him in early June. Let him compete and see if the investment pays off. When Percy Harvin went down last season. The coaches were praying that someone would step us. LOL! How do you know Burton isn't a hard worker too? Childs has given the team nothing to this point and yet you want to keep a roster spot open for him?I rather see someone like Greg Childs take his spot on the roster. I say let the receivers compete and earn their roster spots. If Burton or Childs get cut because someone else was better, that's fine with me. I just see no reason to be so mercenary with Burton right now, especially if he's performing well in OTAs. See if he can continue that in training camp and if it translates into good game performances in the preseason, then make a decision.
Re: 2013 OTA/Offseason Schedule
Agreed. There's something like 12 WR's on the roster right now, more than half won't make the squad. Cutting Burton now is a little extreme to say the least.Mothman wrote:I say let the receivers compete and earn their roster spots. Re: 2013 OTA/Offseason Schedule
Are you serious? Greg Childs had a LEGITIMATE excuse, he was injured last year and was making more noise than Burton until injured his knees. Burton on the other hand has done nothing because he is terrible. Wait I know what this is, everyone thinks I want him to get cut RIGHT NOW. I forgot on this board you have to be very specific with your words. What I mean is he needs to be cut BEFORE the final cuts are made. If not Childs, let someone NEW get the spot. Burton will continue to do nothing if he stay on the team.
OTA reports doesnt impress me, I wanna see how he does with full pads on.

Re: 2013 OTA/Offseason Schedule
Childs didn't play in a single preseason game so all the "noise" was similar beat reporting. Don't get me wrong, I thought Burton was very underwhelming and I was very critical of him but the feedback you're getting is because you seem to be overly emotional about an OTA report. As Jim mentioned, if he doesn't perform, he won't make the team. A receiver (especially a late round pick) typically takes around three years to realize their full potential, I think at least seeing what he has to offer in training camp is reasonable.JEC334 wrote:Are you serious? Re: 2013 OTA/Offseason Schedule
OTA reports don't impress me either but why would the team "let" someone new get Burton's spot purely for the sake of it when they've invested two years into developing him? Why determine now that Burton needs to be cut before the final roster cutdown? Why not just give all the receivers they've actually signed the chance to compete and base cutdowns on their performance?JEC334 wrote:Are you serious? Look, I'm no Burton fan and I get why you want to see the team move on. He's been pretty useless as a receiver thus far. All I'm saying is that there's a system in place that allows this stuff to get settled on the field, based on performance. There's no reason not to just let that play out and make decisions based on performance.
Re: 2013 OTA/Offseason Schedule
So in your mind it makes more sense to cut the player that is young and showing progress and keep the player that blew out both of his knees just coming down from a catch with no contact and hasn't played for the team at all?JEC334 wrote:Are you serious? The only thing Childs has going for him is mystery due to the fact that he can't get on the field to play ...

Re: 2013 OTA/Offseason Schedule
He has not shown any progress. A couple of good catches at the OTAs mean nothing. You would hope that every WR can atleast catch the ball at OTAs, considering it's non contact. This has more to do with Stephon Burton getting cut than Greg Childs. If Greg Childs doesn't pan out, cut him too. We still have plenty of WRs who I feel has the potential to take Burton's spot on the roster.Cliff wrote: So in your mind it makes more sense to cut the player that is young and showing progress and keep the player that blew out both of his knees just coming down from a catch with no contact and hasn't played for the team at all?

Re: 2013 OTA/Offseason Schedule
They might mean something to the coaching staff, who are using OTAs to see progress, put basics in place, etc. It's a first step toward training camp and the preseason. Nobody is suggesting a few good catches at OTAss should earn Burton a roster spot!JEC334 wrote:He has not shown any progress. A couple of good catches at the OTAs mean nothing.
I agree and maybe one of them will. I'd certainly like whoever gets that spot to be better than Burton was last year. Maybe Burton himself can do that. ALL I'm saying is let their performance this summer guide the decision. You've apparently made up your mind that Burton should be cut. If that choice was going to be based purely on his performance over the previous two years, I'd cut him too but at this point in the offseason, he's signed. He's going to training camp and consequently, they might as well see if the proverbial light has come on for him and if their 2 year investment in him is going to pay dividends. You would hope that every WR can atleast catch the ball at OTAs, considering it's non contact. I'm not sure what Childs has to do with this, other than being another WR competing for a spot on the team. In fact, unless you have a problem with just letting the WRs they've signed actually compete for and earn their place on the final roster, I'm not sure where the issue lies. After all, you said you want to see how Burton does with full pads on and that's exactly what I'm saying the Vikes should do.

Pretty sure that's Kenechi Udeze working with #Vikings coaches today. pic.twitter.com/CShXPM8pcO
Lower attendance at #Vikings OTAs today. That usually happens the week before minicamp. Veterans not here to start practice include Greenway, Allen (shoulder/knee), Peterson, Jackson, Jennings, Sullivan (knee). Rookie safety Darius Eubanks sitting this one out with injury. Not sure what.
Working on returns today: Randle, Patterson, Robinson, S Burton, Webb, Sherels, Jefferson, McCoy, J Williams. Worth noting rookie Cordarrelle Patterson got first rep of kick return, not Marcus Sherels. No surprises on KR team. Same as last year.
Another good sign for rookie 7th round pick Travis Bond: on first field goal unit. #Vikings
Blair Walsh was 6 of 8 in a team field goal period, missing wide left from 40 and 45. Long of 50.
Tom Pelissero on TwitterTyrone McKenzie came off field panting during special teams period. Shook his head at me. "We getting season ready right now."

Jacob Lacey, who had thumb surgery last week, is here. Left arm in a sling. #Vikings
Joe Berger getting some time at right guard and Brandon Fusco at center with ones, at least in jogthru. John Sullivan rehabbing knee.
Michael Mauti is rehabbing his knee at #Vikings OTAs. https://vine.co/v/blhzWZDmO50

Mankato product Adam Thielen seems to do something positive every practice. Just caught a go ball in stride from Cassel.
