Preseason trade talk
#1. Toby Gerhart. If the Vikings could get a 4th or 5th round pick for him, that would be awesome. Probably won't be back next year, he's unlikely to contribute much this year if Peterson is healthy, and if he were to be forced start, I think the Vikings would be instantly looking for someone better.
#2. Jerome Simpson. I don't think he's a bad receiver, but his upside just looks to be less and less each day. Cordarrelle Patterson already looks like he should be starting ahead of Simpson. Jarius Wright is this team's #3 WR. Stephen Burton will make the team again. After that, there are too many young guys with upside - Joe Webb, Rodney Smith, Chris Summers, Adam Thielen - that I think the Vikings would be better off without Simpson in their way. Get a draft pick for him, or a backup linebacker or offensive lineman.

I don't think they could get anything for Simpson. And unfortunately I don't think he will go anywhere. I do think trading Gerhart wouldn't be the endof the world. He's like some baseball players that they send to the minors even though they are very good but need to play every day and it can't happen in the majors.

Based on what? The last time he was forced to start, he played well and they've shown no inclination at all to replace him as the primary backup.
I'm with PMR regarding Simpson: I doubt they could even get a draft pick for him at this point.

Re: Preseason trade talk
No way we get a 4th for Toby or Spielman would have done it.
Simpson may be one player worth less then Toby.

Re: Preseason trade talk
You think Spielman has been putting out feelers for a Gerhart trade? Low 4th rounder, at best, from a team that really needs a RB, but a 5th would be more likely. I don't think they'd bother for anything less.PurpleKoolaid wrote:No way we get a 4th for Toby or Spielman would have done it.
Re: Preseason trade talk
The Vikes would be lucky to get a ham sandwich for Simpson. The guy has never shown anything wearing purple. Maybe it's just bad luck, or whatever, but another weak performance like tonight and it's time to just cut the dude.

Re: Preseason trade talk
If things continue as they went tonight, you'd have to think it makes more sense to play the younger guys ahead of Simpson. And if he can't make this team I doubt he'd be tradable. Still it was the first game.....Burton could fall flat next week and Simpson could get his act together. Either way the unit looks promising.
I don't know how I feel about trading Toby. He does a good job. If there was a good deal for him out there I suppose they'd pull the trigger, assuming they're convinced he'll bolt next season. But if they move him and, godforbid, AD goes down....I don't like the prospects. Might be better to play it safe with an established back up and cut bait at season's end rather than be a little greedy for an extra pick. Not really greedy....but if it ain't broke and all......

Re: Preseason trade talk
I'll agree that the pass was not on perfectly on-target. I'll even concede that it would have been a good-great catch for Simpson to haul it in. But....isn't that what we expect of a wide receiver? I'd like to see him make some catches to justify his title (if nothing else).Eli wrote:I really don't think Jerome Simpson had much of a chance of catching that pass from Ponder. If you're going to throw a ball that fast and that flat, it needs to be more accurate.

Game two should be interesting as far as watching Ponder and Simpson~

Ahhhh c'mon....in game 2 or 3 he'll play a full qtr, maybe more. Then a series or not at all in the final game.Purplemania wrote: Starters usually get less reps as preseason goes on though. Ponder might only attempt 1 pass before getting yanked
Re: Preseason trade talk
Looks like he might get a full quarter next game
Judd Zulgad @1500ESPNJudd 12m
Christian Ponder said he thinks he will probably play a quarter in the Vikings' second preseason game next week at Buffalo.

A series or 2 in game 1, a quarter in game 2, play into the 3rd quarter game 3, street clothes in game 4.Purplemania wrote: Starters usually get less reps as preseason goes on though. Ponder might only attempt 1 pass before getting yanked
